Outliers Answer

You can link to an outlier applet that shows how the addition of one new dot affects the numerical value of the correlation coefficient.

Particularly attend to the new numerical value of the correlation coefficient displayed in red at the bottom of the scatterplot.

The line describing the dot cluster, referred to as the regression line, anticipates the discussion of the prediction line in the next chapter, as also does the equation for this line at the bottom of the scatterplot.

Question: The new dot has the greatest impact on the numerical value of the correlation coefficient – and qualifies as an outlier-- when located in what sector or sectors of the scatterplot?  Answer
